Our commitment

The SwissCityMarathon - Lucerne association has set itself the goal of organising a sustainable event that can continue in the future. This means that we are socially, economically and ecologically committed and take these aspects into account when planning and implementing our event.

You will find our versatile commitment in the following overview.

  • Our social commitment

A sense of responsibility, social commitment and sustainability are topics that are becoming increasingly important at sporting events such as the SwissCityMarathon - Lucerne. For this reason, social commitment plays an important role in an increasingly economic and rationalized society. The main focuses and measures of our efforts in the area of society are outlined below.

    Focus & measures

    • The SwissCityMarathon is a popular sport event with regional, national and international exposure for Lucerne and the surrounding area.
    • Every year, a running festival is organised with more than 10,000 athletes supported by around 50,000 spectators.
    • The tourist brand "Lucerne" is being expanded and strengthened.
    • Social institutions (such as IG Arbeit) and charity projects (a.o. Foundation Child & Family; Foundation SOS children's village; Foundation Make a Wish; "LZ Weihnachtsaktion"; etc.) are supported in various ways.
    • Thanks to the cooperation with the Max Havelaar Foundation, products bearing the Fairtrade label are used, which are manufactured according to strict social and ecological criteria and are traded fairly.
    • Through integrative measures, different groups (including holders of cultural certificates, people with disabilities, asylum seekers, etc.) are integrated into social events.
    • The event offers motivational incentives and goals to promote the health-promoting physical activity of numerous people, families, groups, companies, etc.
    • The regional association system (e.g. sport clubs) is supported by calling for cooperation and commitment - promoting and generating shared experiences in return.
    • The SwissCityMarathon assumes an essential role as a mediator between authorities, partners and sponsors.
    • Thanks to the SwissCityMarathon, people are brought together who want to achieve a common goal. This creates connections between runners, volunteers, spectators, etc., which are desirable and relevant from a social point of view.
    • An attempt is made to maintain and support the running community all year round, like in social media or by organizing other events such as the "Lozärner Cross".
  • Our economic commitment

A sense of responsibility, economic commitment and sustainability are topics that are becoming increasingly important at sporting events such as the SwissCityMarathon - Lucerne. For this reason, economic commitment plays a key role in an increasingly globalized and rationalized society. In the following, the focal points and measures are described.

    Focus & measures

    • Every year, a running festival  for more than 10,000 athletes and 50,000 spectators is organised.
    • The SwissCityMarathon generates added value in the city and region of Lucerne, such as the hotel industry, gastronomy or retail trade.
    • Local suppliers and companies are taken into account
    • Social institutions and charity projects (e. g. Foundation Child & Family; Foundation SOS children's village; Foundation Make a Wish; "LZ Weihnachtsaktion"; etc.) are supported financially.
    • Health and medical expenses are saved thanks to the promotion of the health-oriented movement behaviour of numerous persons, families, groups and companies.
    • The regional association system is supported with more than CHF 60,000 for the indispensable support and voluntary work.
    • The SwissCityMarathon assumes an essential role as a mediator between authorities, partners and sponsors, who in turn can use the (new) contacts for future projects and collaborations.
    • The running community is maintained all year round. The organisation of other events such as the "Lozärner Cross" for example, provides support for other economically relevant elements.
  • Our environmental commitment

Responsibility, environmental commitment and sustainability are topics that are becoming increasingly important at sporting events such as the SwissCityMarathon - Lucerne. For this reason, environmental commitment is also becoming a firm priority in an increasingly economic and rationalised society. The SwissCityMarathon association feels obliged to give at this major event the largest environmental significance. Effects on the environment are hardly avoidable in such a big event. With appropriate measures, the effects can be minimized.

The principles and focal points of our environmental management are outlined below.

    Principles & focus

The precautionary principle has top priority in planning and implementation. The environment is seen as a cross-cutting issue and concerns all departments. For the SwissCityMarathon - Lucerne, companies from the region are taken into account wherever possible. It goes without saying that we work together with the public authorities. The measures for the environment-friendly execution of the marathon are part of PR. They are communicated accordingly and serve to promote environmental awareness in a positive way.

Based on these principles, the following focal points of sustainable and environmentally friendly action are defined in the sustainability concept for the SwissCityMarathon - Lucerne:

    • An environment superviser ensures that environmental measures are incorporated into the planning process and are implemented at an early stage.
    • Public transport will be promoted. Thanks to the SwissRunners Ticket, public transport in Switzerland is free of charge for all participants.
    • In the case of motorised private transport, a high degree of utilisation is sought and it is kept away from the centre.
    • Waste is first and foremost avoided, secondly reduced and thirdly separated. Numerous waste and recycling stations are in use. Various cleanteams ensure clean event locations.
    • For the event, existing infrastructure will be used wherever possible.
    • Energy consumption is kept low and covered by renewable energies.
    • Seasonal and regional products and companies (with labels) are given preferential treatment.
    • Cooperation with the authorities is strengthened and compensation measures are secured.
    • Thanks to the cooperation with the Max Havelaar Foundation, products with the Fairtrade label are purchased, which are manufactured according to strict social and ecological criteria and are traded fairly.
    • The environmental measures are actively communicated and sensitized to environmentally compatible actions.
    • A controlling system is used to record the ecobalance of the SwissCityMarathon - Lucerne and to enable improvements in favour of the environment for future events.

    Measures

On the basis of these principles and priorities, specific measures will be identified on an ongoing basis and implemented before, during and after the event. The measures can be classified into the following subject areas:

    • Mobility
    • Nutrition
    • Disposal & Cleaning
    • Facilities
    • Noise
    • Logistics & Transport
    • Volunteers
    • Communication & information
    • Planning & implementation
    • Organizing committee
  • Fairtrade Max Havelaar

The SwissCityMarathon - Lucerne sets another example in the area of sustainability and relies on bananas from the Fairtrade production certified by Max Havelaar. In Switzerland, the Fairtrade label is only awarded to products that are produced according to strict social and ecological criteria and are traded fairly.

The main tasks of the Max Havelaar Foundation are the creation of market access as well as information and awareness-raising work. Fairtrade also pursues a holistic approach in which, in addition to the requirements for sustainable cultivation, the democratic organisation of producers and fair trade are central. The foundation is a member of "Fairtrade International" and follows international Fairtrade standards.

The foundation is a non-profit organization and was founded in 1992 by the five Swiss relief organizations Brot für alle, Caritas, Fastenopfer, Helvetas and Swissaid.
