Starting procedure and divisions

Our starting system is based on staggered starting slots of a maximum of 500 runners. This is evaluated positively by the runners: Choice of the personally preferred start time; relaxed atmosphere; individual arrival time; no hustle and bustle and crowds at the start; enough space on the course and always many spectators at the side of the course, which provide a goosebump atmosphere!

Important: When registering you choose an individual start slot according to availability. The slots are NOT divided according to performance. The distribution of runners on the course is even, so that in each slot the same conditions prevail and it does not matter for your own performance in which slot you start.

  • Start slot allocation

The starting system will be in several slots of maximum 500 runners. When registering, you choose an individual starting slot according to availability. The slots are NOT divided according to performance. The distribution of runners on the course is even, so that in each slot the same conditions prevail and it does not matter for your own performance in which slot you start.

    • At the online registration you choose your preferred start time.
    • First come, first served.
    • Based on your start time you will be assigned a start slot A to U.
    • Your start time and your start slot A to U are clearly visible on the front left of your race number (see graphic below).

If you are one of the fastest runners or want to compete for the day's victory, you can apply for a starting slot in the performance slot. For this we need a corresponding performance record within the last three years, which you have to upload during the registration process.

  • The start system

The start takes place in three steps: 1. entrance > 2. boarding > 3. start

Step 1: Entrance to the seperated start area

    • The entrance is timed for each start slot and can be seen on the back of your race number.
    • Volunteers and signs at the entrance show which start slots are currently allowed to enter the start area.
    • Attention: Early queuing and waiting before the entrance does not bring any advantages.

Step 2: Boarding in the personal start slot A to U

    • Signal boards mark the assembly point of your start slot. Proceed to the appropriate slot with your letter. Boarding into your slot is controlled.
    • Boarding into the start slot is possible until the start time of the respective start slot. After that time, access will be closed. Late participants must start in one of the following start slots.
    • Do you want to run together with a person who is not assigned to the same start slot? This is possible if the person in the earlier start slot moves to the back of the colleague's start slot. It is always possible to start in a later start slot than assigned. (See "Change to another start slot" below).

    Step 3: Start

    • The individual start slots will be allowed to start on time.
    • Your personal time will not be counted until you cross the timing mat (=net time).
    • You will find your start time clearly visible on the bottom left of your race number.
    • As soon as the front start slot has started, the runners of the next start slot move to the start line.
  • All start slots at a glance
  • Advantages of this start system
    • relaxed and individual arrival
    • no early getting up for half marathon runners
    • more free space
      • at the ship shuttle
      • at the start
      • on the course
      • at the aid stations
      • at the finish
      • in the checkrooms
    • less waiting time
    • better atmosphere on the course (more spectators)
    • staggered finish for marathon, half marathon and CityRun winners
  • Change to another start slot
    • Change to another start slot
    • Those who want to start in a later start slot can do so at any time and do not have to register in advance.
    • Participants who are not assigned to the same start slot and want to run together may do so. In this case, the person who is assigned to an earlier start slot will move to the back in the start slot of the co-runners. It is therefore possible to start in a later start slot than allocated.
    • For a reallocation to an earlier start slot, a request must be submitted with the online form after registration and transfer of the entry fee. The requests will be checked individually and depending on availability the reallocation will be made. A processing fee of CHF 40.- will be charged for reallocations after the start number allocation has been made. The first start number allocation will take place at the beginning of October and thereafter on an ongoing basis.
